贾琪 Qi Jia

杨若澜 Ruolan Yang

Qi Jia and Ruolan Yang are members of the Advanced Data And Programming Technology Lab (ADAPT-Lab) under the supervision of Prof. Kenny Zhu. They both work on natural language processing.

Qi Jia is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate focusing on dialogue understanding and generation. She has published 4 papers in top-tier NLP/AI conferences and was awarded the National Scholarship for Graduate Students.

Ruolan Yang is a third-year MSc candidate. Her research interests include dialogue system and automatic evaluation. She recently focuses on improving dialogue rewriting. She has been awarded First-class Academic Scholarship for several times.

Dialogue Context Modeling and Open-domain Dialogue System Evaluation

(1) Intelligent dialogue systems have been researched for decades. With the massive emergence of online communication platforms, efficient information retrieval and digestion for dialogues are in urgent need. Modeling multi-turn dialogue context is the common and fundamental issue when developing natural language tools for all of these application scenarios. In this talk, I will introduce the dialogue context modeling problem, together with recent technical advances.

(2) Evaluation is a long-standing issue in developing conversational dialogue systems. Unlike those task-oriented dialogue systems whose success can be measured in relation to an a priori defined ground truth, chatbots do not solve a clearly-defined task, it has an open-ended nature. The major challenge with the evaluation of open-domain dialog systems comes from the one-to-many relationship between the user’s input and plausible responses. In this talk, I will introduce existing traditional evaluation approaches for open-domain dialogue systems and also current progress and challenges of this problem.
